When I was a teenager, I followed the Dallas Cowboys.
Growing up in Arkansas in the 1990s, the Dallas Cowboys were not only America’s team but they were the local team and were always on Sundays. The New Orleans Saints were always on Sundays too, but again … it was the 1990s. They were awful. The Cowboys had Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith and they were amazing.
As I got a little older … in other words, started forming my own opinions … I started not liking them as much. Their owner, Jerry Jones, was smarmy and a real tool. He made dumb decisions that he seemed to think were genius, but were actually hurting the team.
Years later, it’s easier to argue that he just keeps doing these bad things.
Case in point. Greg Hardy.
The worst person on planet Earth.
On Friday, Deadspin released an investigative report including photos of the injuries inflicted on Hardy’s ex, Nicole Holder.
The photos are disturbing. It’s the only proper word for it.
Even more disturbing, though, is the reaction of the report and photos by Jerry Jones.
This is what the head cowboy had to say:
“While we did not have access to the photos that became public today, we were and are aware of the serious nature of this incident. We as an organization take this very seriously. We do not condone domestic violence. We entered into the agreement with Greg fully understanding that there would be scrutiny and criticism. We have given Greg a second chance. He is a member of our team and someone who is grateful for the opportunity he has been given to move forward with his life and his career.”
What the fuck is this garbage?
How Jones, or let’s just say anyone, can look at these images on Deadspin and not think that Hardy needs to be immediately banned from the NFL for life … or better yet, locked away in prison … is beyond comprehension.
Hardy is a vile human being. Comments after he returned to action a few weeks confirm this. It was as if he learned nothing and just wanted to get back out there … “guns blazin'” as he put it.
But. I gotta stop thinking with my little lady brain I guess.
Were the NFL or Jerry Jones and the Cowboys to stand up like men in this situation and BAN GREG HARDY, well that would be just too courageous. Greg Hardy is considered a top defender. That talent is hard to come by … apparently.
If the NFL were to ban Greg Hardy; if the Cowboys were to release Greg Hardy; That would be a sign of respect … dare I say acknowledgement … to women who want to support this league.
I love watching this game. It’s so entertaining. But it’s going to be hard to ever watch the Cowboys without a lot of hatred after this incident.
I hope they prove me wrong, but you just know Jerry and the league will never do what’s right in this situation.
